Providing Safe Water by Community-Women and Girls champions through Advocacy in Huye District, Kinazi Sector, Byinza Cell.

For people living in 4 villages of Gakoni, Buremera, Rwerinka, and Nyarurama of Byinza cell, Kinazi Sector in Huye District, one of the issue-stated in the location was access to safe water due to the damage to water pipes often requires long, arduous hours of walking to the nearest borehole of other villages. Due to the amount of time required to reach clean water, many individuals in these 4 mentioned villages frequently resort to drinking dirty, stagnant surface water, such as from puddles or rivers, that may have also been used for bathing, washing clothes, and feeding animals, cleaning home or home utensils. Mostly the coffee industry located in Kinazi started suffering and marked a decrease in production. The issue was tranquil for a period of 8 months.
However, women and girls’ champions realized that access to safe water was essential in combatting the effects of acute unhygienic and improving the health of communities in Kinazi and decided to bring back a water pipeline system that was broken in place through advocacy channels and strategies. The champions have identified the issue to be advocated and defined the audience to be early communicated (reference : an attached letter written to the cell council) ; till the last step of evaluating the effectiveness so that residents of the location could more readily access clean water.
As explained by Seraphine UWAYEZU, after identifying the issue and composing the letter to the cell council, the strategy used by champions to communicate with council leaders, the follow-ups made by meeting face to face with the Executive Secretary of Byinza Cell, the one who took into consideration their request, unfortunately, due to the nonexistence of budget of cells, the issue has been transferred to the sector of Kinazi, then from the sector level to the district level, Huye district took the initiative and committed to repairing the pipes in 4 villages. This journey lasted 4 months.
The Kinazi citizens in collaboration with the entrepreneur who established these watery taps nominated a person in charge to properly look after the water, instruct locals on how to maintain and repair the watery tap and galvanize residents to contribute 10 Rwf per jerrycan to save for any related costs.
Madam Fortunée NYIRAHABIZI one of the women champions who is the resident of Nyarurama village has realized the value of having safe water access close to their homes, stating : “This borehole is not meant only for us, but for generations to come.”

The PFTH has supported creating and strengthening the local women and girls’ networks in leadership, public speaking, evidence-based advocacy, etc. under GEWEP III programs.
One of these 4 boreholes throughout Gatoni, Buremera, Rwerinka, and Nyarurama villages, provides clean water to approximately 304 Homes
The Social Economic Development Officer (SEDO) of Byiza cell in the Kinazi Sector testified that the contribution of both women and girls’ champions in this issue tenacity rate at 50% ; a proof that the women and girls’ voices are making an impact not only at the household level but also at the community level.
