From victims to Champions

KANKESHA Claudine from Gahotore village, Nkora cell, Kigeyo sector in Rutsiro district is a mother of four. Currently, an active member of VSLA women’s cooperative ‘Mugore - Mukobwa Tuzamurane Kigeyo’ before the formation of their cooperative in 2023 Claudine was a traditional beer business woman Urwagwa (a local brew made out of crushed bananas) to earn a living, however, with the help of her husband she was given three bunches of banana worthy 15,000 Rwf as a loan to start the business which she paid back after 8 days. At the beginning of the WORK project, she was presented with an opportunity to join the cooperatives and is now a member. In the process, she applied for a loan of 20,000 Rwf from the cooperative which she used to buy a piglet and raised it to be sold at 182,000 Rwf after 10 months. Me and my husband jointly own land from my contribution and we have another piglet. We managed to pay the medical insurance to my whole family. This is due to the benefits of working together as women in cooperatives and through trainings women can identify profitable businesses to invest in. Joyfully said, Claudine.

During this reporting period, a proportion of 1400 WICBTs were supported by saving initiations. WICBTs received capacity building on how to initiate saving within their groups/VSLAs, they were encouraged to save as a group and were trained on the importance of saving that promotes their togetherness as a group.

Currently, WICBTs groups have managed to save fifteen million five hundred thirty-three thousand eight hundred twenty Rwandan francs (15,533,820 Rwf). The next step is to link WICBTs to financial institutions after proving the level of business development and the need for financial institution intervention. All cooperative members have equal rights to access these loans with a small interest.
